Hiring Students for Summer

Summer work is processed separately from academic year positions. Whether employment is a continuation from the academic year or a new position, student employees must be processed via Workable or the rehire process and receive a hiring confirmation email from Human Resources before they can begin work in their summer position and obtain access to their timecard in Oracle.

To post your summer position on Workable, complete the Position Posting Request form.

Eligibility

All actively enrolled students for the semester are eligible for on-campus jobs, unless restricted by visa status. Total combined work hours (across all Middlebury positions) may not exceed 40 hours per week during the summer.

  • Remote work from international locations is not permitted.
  • Students who are on leave or withdrawn are not eligible for student employment, including summer positions. However, they can be hired into temporary staff positions.
  • Recent graduates are not eligible for undergraduate student employment. They should visit the Middlebury College Careers page for available staff roles if they are interested in continuing to be employed with the college.

Remote Work

Students can only work remotely if physically located within the United States.  All duties and responsibilities must be achievable by remote work. International remote work is not allowed. Faculty interested in hiring Research Assistants located outside the U.S. should contact Undergraduate Research to explore non-employment options.

Students who are indicated as working remotely will receive an email from HR@middlebury.edu requesting information about the location of their work for the summer. It is extremely important to provide this information by the given deadline so students are taxed in the correct state and receive the correct wage.

Campus Housing and Dining Information

Students seeking summer housing must work a minimum of 30 hours per week to be eligible, which can include a combination of remote and on-campus hours.

All summer hires requesting campus housing must be processed by the predetermined housing deadline (2026 date TBD).

  • Students must be submitted through the Student Rehire process or listed in Workable under “Student Hired” with a future start date by that deadline.
  • Students who do not request housing may continue to be hired after the deadline.

Summer Research

  • Faculty members with approved mentored faculty-student research positions must complete a Summer Research Assistant (SRA) form. This form confirms that the research meets the criteria outlined in the Policies and Procedures for Summer Research Assistants. The form deadline for summer research assistants is TBD for 2026. Please reach out to the Undergraduate Research Office for more information.

Fall Early Return Students

The deadline for completing student rehires or new hires for early return in Fall 2026 is TBD. This deadline ensures coordination between Human Resources, Residential Life, and Facilities for employment records and housing assignments.
