In the fall semester of 2020, 34 Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey students will participate in semester-long immersive learning programs, working virtually with organizations around the country and the globe.

MIIS Students in the International Education Management program (IEM) spend their final semester working with organizations in the international education field. We spoke with Aleena Yunuba Hammack ‘20 who is participating in a practicum with Camp Fire, a nonprofit organization with a 110-year history of inclusive youth development.

Immersive professional learning describes the real-world, applied learning opportunities offered through Middlebury Institute programs. Despite the onset of a global pandemic, practicum students successfully completed their internships and field projects remotely for the second half of the semester.

Gloria Zhang is a second-semester student in the Translation and Localization Management (TLM) program at MIIS, with a focus in the localization track. This past January, she participated in Team France, one of the immersive professional learning programs during J-term.
Team France 2020, led by Professor David Wick in the International Education Management (IEM) program, took participants to Paris, where students made site visits to Middlebury Le Centre Madeleine, Campus France, CEA Paris, Sciences Po Bordeaux, and many more. Students also got to learn about the history of croissants and baguettes at a French bakery.

For Middlebury Institute students, the January Term (J-term) offers the opportunity to put theories and lessons to the test in courses offered in five different countries, work on directed study projects at home or abroad, or get ahead by taking intensive subject matter classes on campus.
