I am writing to follow up on the email I sent to all Schools Abroad students yesterday. When the message was sent, we were waiting to make a decision about the continuation of the Schools Abroad in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay) and Cameroon.
I write to you with the disappointing, yet not unexpected news that, effective immediately, the Schools Abroad in France, Germany, Spain, Russia, Morocco, Japan, Jordan, and India are suspending in-country activity. We are still in discussion about plans for the Schools in Latin America and Cameroon.
You may have already heard about President Trump’s announcement Wednesday night during his speech to the nation about coronavirus. We know that there has been quite a bit of concern about his statements regarding travel to the US from Europe.
I’m writing as a follow up to President Patton’s message earlier today regarding the decision to have students leave campus at the end of this week and to deliver all instruction remotely beginning March 30.
Given the latest reports concerning the coronavirus, I’ve just sent the following communication to students enrolled in our School in Italy. We’ve also forwarded the letter to parents. We’ll keep you up to date on our decisions as situations continue to unfold. The letter will also be posted to our page.

I wanted to reach out to all of you with information related to the coronavirus situation. Some of you may already have received country-specific information from your on-site program staff. I know this is the case for those of you enrolled in some of Middlebury’s Schools Abroad. I write to ask all of you to follow the advice you’re receiving both from your on-site staff as well as from local emergency officials.

The CDC and State Department recently raised their risk advice to Level 3 (“avoid nonessential travel” and “reconsider travel”). Several colleges and universities and study abroad providers have suspended their programs and/or banned all travel to China. The list will likely expand rapidly within the next couple of days. Considering all this, as well as other factors, we have decided to suspend the School in China (all three sites) this spring.
