Angela Luedke MAIEM ’21 pursued an Immersive Professional Learning (IPL) experience with the University of California, Riverside (UCR) in the Education Abroad Office. Angela helped establish a new class, Crossing Culture, to increase participation in study abroad opportunities at UCR.

Maia Stewart, a joint MPA and IEM student participated as an assistant program director at Team4Tech. Maia interned during the summer of 2021. Carolyn Meyer helped Maia find the position at Team4Tech because the position aligned with Maia’s values and interests.

Julia Benson, a Conference Interpretation student, connected remotely to her internship with UNESCO. Julia interned during summer 2021 and followed in the footsteps of MIIS alumnae Heather Soltis MATI ’18, after discussing Heather’s experience with UNESCO.

A new memorandum of understanding with UNICEF reserves internship slots at the UN agency for two Middlebury Institute students each year, offering an accelerated path into the international development field.

The Middlebury Institute offered the (IPSS) practicum internship course as a summer course for the first time 2021. Six students from three degree programs (IEP, IPD, and MPA) are participating in the first summer cohort.

Forty four MIIS alumni volunteered their time to serve as alumni mentors to practicum students in the International Professional Service Semester during the 20/21 academic year.

Despite the full year of a global pandemic and lockdowns, practicum students successfully secured internships and field projects they could complete remotely for the spring 2021 semester. Students joined the massive “working from home” movement primed with skills to make an impact.

The MATESOL program at MIIS includes a practicum portion, which combines reflective practice and professional development in preparing students for a career in language education. Mary Njuguna is completing her practicum with two organizations, the International School of Monterey and the English for Academic and Professional Purposes program at the Institute.
