Here are a list of Frequently Asked Questions concerning the application process, structure, and content of the Symposium.

Is there any funding, stipend, or financial support provided to fellows for travel, lodging, food, and other expenses?
Yes. Fellows selected by the Summer Symposium receive full funding which includes travel, lodging, select meals, and per diem for the duration of the program. Applicants should note that any additional personal costs (local transit, optional excursions) are their own responsibility.
What are the expected outcomes for fellows after the symposium? Are there alumni networks, publication opportunities, or institutional partnerships?
After the Summer Symposium, fellows join the MSS Alumni Network, which offers ongoing webinars, a mailing list, and mentoring. Select alumni may also be invited to participate in programs in subsequent years.
Is there any academic credit or certificate provided?
Fellows will receive a certificate of participation from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. If you wish to claim academic credit at your home institution, we will provide a syllabus and transcript of hours; please coordinate with your advisor/department in advance.
Are there pre-readings or preparation required before arrival?
Yes. Fellows receive a curated reading list before the program begins.
Will the Summer Symposium provide assistance with visas?
Yes. The Summer Symposium will provide guidance and required invitation letters for any visas necessary for Uzbekistan, Georgia, or Armenia. Fellows should begin the visa process as early possible once notified of acceptance.
What will lodging and meals look like in each location?
The Summer Symposium provides hotel or guest house lodging in each country. Breakfast is typically included, and fellows receive a per diem for lunches and dinners unless a group meal is arranged as part of the program.
What is the daily schedule like during the symposium?
Fellows can expect a full academic day with lectures, seminars, discussions, and occasional excursions. Some days include travel or cultural programming. Evenings are typically free for reading and preparation.
Are excursions and site visits mandatory?
Yes. Site visits and excursions are integral to the multidisciplinary design of the Summer Symposium and are required for all fellows.
What criteria does the selection committee prioritize?
The selection committee considers language preparation, academic merit, clarity of purpose, regional or thematic relevance, potential contribution to the cohort, and the strength of recommendations.
Is this program suitable for applicants who do not focus specifically on Russia?
Yes. Applicants whose work focuses on Central Asia, the South Caucasus, geopolitics, international relations, history, anthropology, and area studies are encouraged to apply. A strong connection to the region or content of the symposium is important.
What costs are not covered by the Summer Symposium?
Fellows are responsible for personal expenses including souvenirs, extra meals, entertainment, and any additional travel before or after the official program dates.
Will fellows have access to online materials, readings, or recordings after the program?
Yes. Fellows receive access to readings and materials. Select recorded sessions may be made available depending on permissions from speakers.
Are fellows required to purchase travel health insurance?
Yes. All fellows must obtain valid travel health insurance for the full duration of the program. This includes coverage for medical care, emergency treatment, and evacuation if needed. The Summer Symposium does not cover medical expenses, and proof of insurance will be required before departure.
What happens if I need to change my travel dates or airline tickets?
The Summer Symposium provides round-trip travel for the official program dates only. Any changes to the itinerary that you request, including date changes, added destinations, or rebooking fees, are your personal responsibility. If you choose to extend your stay before or after the program, you will be responsible for any cost differences or fees associated with altering the ticket.
