How are governmental negotiations at UNFCCC Conferences of the Parties (COPs) shaped by generational gaps and questions about intersectionality? Former climate negotiator for the government of Mexico, ‘23, will speak about her experiences at UNFCCC COP-29 to the Middlebury community and broader public.

While #MeToo movement has emerged as a significant global phenomenon since late 2017, Japan initially exhibited a notably muted response. This stands in stark contrast to neighboring South Korea, where the movement ignited a powerful wave of revelations, empowering women to break their silence. However, the persistent efforts of courageous women like Shiori Ito, coupled with a series of controversial not-guilty verdicts in sexual assault cases, eventually catalyzed a shift in Japan.

Erin Durban and Lucinda Ramberg, two feminist, queer, postcolonial scholars, will have a conversation about queer anthropology: What does it mean to queer anthropology? How can we do anthropology, as well as ethnographic methods more broadly, in a queer way and for queer purposes?

Erin Durban, a scholar of queer anthropology, will discuss their book The Sexual Politics of Empire: Postcolonial Homophobia in Haiti. Evangelical Christians and members of the global LGBTQI human rights movement have vied for influence in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake. Each side accuses the other of serving foreign interests. Yet each proposes future foreign interventions on behalf of their respective causes despite the country’s traumatic past with European colonialism and American imperialism. As Durban shows, two discourses dominate discussions of intervention.

How does the state shape gender identity? Florence Ashley, drawing on their legal scholarship in Canada, explores how state power is used to regulate gender expression and presentation. Florence is the author of Banning Transgender Conversion Practices: A Legal and Policy Analysis, which was published by UBC Press in 2022.
