BLSE aims to foster an inclusive learning environment that is safe, conducive to graduate study, appreciative of differences, and mindful of place. To the end, we ask you to abide by the following policies. See the BLSE Student Handbook for more information.

Safety

  • All dormitory doors are accessible only by a code: please don’t prop these doors open for any reason.
  • We encourage you to keep your room locked when you’re not there: thefts are rare at Bread Loaf, but they happen. BLSE does not assume responsibility for stolen personal items.
  • Leave your appliances (radios, TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, microwaves, hot plates, coffee pots) at home: dorm wiring will not support them. You may use hairdryers or curling irons in grounded outlets in the bathrooms.
  • Candles, incense, halogen lamps are not permitted in dorm rooms; nor are fires, in in-room fireplaces. Be aware, too, that the heat from a running laptop can ignite flammable bedding. Campus buildings are old and wooden, and vulnerable to fire.
  • Smoking is NOT ALLOWED in any campus buildings, including dormitories. If you smoke outdoors, make sure that you’re away from any open window and that you dispose of all smoking materials in proper receptacles.

Quiet / Quiet Hours

  • To promote an environment that is conducive to study, we require that all campus dorms be “quiet” from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am every day, even on weekends. This includes dorm porches.
  • To meet students’ needs, we designate a few dorms (TBA) as “quiet”: in these dorms, quiet hours extend from 9:30 pm to 7:00 am.
  • For all times and dorms, please use headphones when using a sound-producing device.
  • You may use the Barn social space or nearby tent to congregate during quiet hours, but please keep the noise down since sound travels easily on and beyond our campus.

Alcohol Policies

  • We offer events that are alcohol-free as well as those that serve alcohol along with non-alcoholic options. We ask those who drink alcohol to do so responsibly, in moderation and in compliance with all policies, which follow state laws.
  • All alcohol served at a School-sponsored event must be consumed at that event only, within the designated spaces.
  • Though you may bring alcohol to campus for your private use, you may not bring alcohol to any School-sponsored event or to the dining hall.
  • Please familiarize yourself with the full Middlebury Alcohol and Other Drugs policy in the student handbook.

Student Events

  • You are welcome to organize events for/with your peers.  If you do so, check the School calendar to make sure your event does not conflict with any classes or other program events or meetings.
  • If you are planning to use a dorm porch, you’ll need to get an okay from all dorm residents.
  • If you are planning to use another campus space, you can reserve that on the sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board outside the main Bread Loaf office (Inn 104).

Visitor Policies

  • You are welcome to bring family members who are residing with you to the weekly all-School picnics (at no cost) and to other campus events: we’ll rely on you to decide which are age-appropriate for your children and to supervise them when they are on campus. You are also welcome to bring your family members to meals, if dining hall space permits, but you will need to purchase meal tickets for them from the Front Desk of the Bread Loaf Inn. We ask you to be especially mindful of children who are in the serving line: kitchen staff transport hot serving dishes in this area.
  • You may bring visiting friends to the campus events (readings, theater productions) that are open to the public. Guests are not allowed, however, to stay overnight on the Bread Loaf campus.
  • Pets are not allowed inside any campus buildings and must be on a leash – and with a caretaker – whenever they are on campus.

Recycling

  • To help keep our campus green, please use the blue recycling receptacles, located across the campus, for plastic, glass, and paper.
  • Practice green habits: turn off lights and fans when you leave a room, use reuseable containers for water and other potables, and do what you can to save paper and trees.
  • Bring any defunct batteries or other hazardous waste to the Front Desk for disposal.
