New Scholarship Clarifies the Origins of Two Lekythoi

Professor of History of Art and Architecture Pieter Broucke details recent research that led to definitive artist attributions for two vases in Middlebury’s Collection.

The first object Middlebury’s Friends of the Art Museum ever gifted to the museum, upon their founding in 1969, was an Ancient Greek black-figure white-ground lekythos decorated by a then unknown artist. Last spring, however, two scholars identified the painter of this vase.

In 2010, the museum acquired a red-figure white-ground lekythos meant to complement the black-figure lekythos. This more recent acquisition has a fascinating provenance, and it, too, has been newly reattributed.
