To date the fundraising efforts of Monterey Institute student, staff, and faculty volunteers for earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan have raised approximately $7,200, with additional activities set for this week and next week. This total does not include proceeds from the MIIS Follies, held April 1. Moreover, the volunteers have found a partner in the Miner Foundation, which has pledged to match dollar for dollar all donations raised by the MIIS community going forward. All donations will go to , as recommended by the , and will be distributed to organizations in Japan working on the ground.

Leaders of the MIIS community fundraising effort have announced a panel presentation on “Japan: Coping with the Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear Disaster” from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 in the Irvine Auditorium (499 Pierce Street). Participants will include Professor Tsuneo Akaha (Monterey Institute); Steven Leeper (chairperson, Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation); Nils G. Bildt (MIIS alumnus and president, CTSS Group), and others. A final program will be announced later on this site.

In addition, student, staff, and faculty volunteers will once again host a table at the weekly Farmers’ Market on Alvarado Street on April 5, from 4:00-7:00 pm. Please stop by and contribute or help in other ways. Donations may be made in cash or check. If you need a receipt for tax purposes, please donate in check form; your check should be made out to Give2Asia and should note that it is for JSNC Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.
