Featuring artists Faith Ringgold and Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter, Paint Me a Road Out of Here uncovers the whitewashed history of Ringgold’s masterpiece, “For the Women’s House,” following its 50-year journey from Rikers Island jail to the Brooklyn Museum in a poignant, funny and true parable of a world without mass incarceration.

Presented by the Johnson Exhibition Gallery and sponsored by the Studio Art Department.

Single screening Friday, November 14th at 3PM. Room 204, Johnson Memorial Building.

Album listening party; Bending the Bars is a groundbreaking musical collaboration between incarcerated artists in South Florida jails and outside producers, the Community Hotline for Incarcerated People (CHIP). Recorded through jail phone lines, and mixed by award-winning producers, the album amplifies the creativity and resilience of people behind bars, transforming isolation into connection and abolitionist action.

NIKKI MORSE Research Professor at University of Maryland Baltimore, specialist in LGBTQ+ Studies, will open the event and host a Q + A afterwards.

Open and free to the public.

Rooted in personal memory and political transformation, my work explores identity, motherhood, migration, and the blurred boundaries between the real and the magical. Through intimate portraits and narratives drawn from my Venezuelan upbringing, my work reflects on nostalgia, displacement, and the spiritual traditions that shape Latin American life. I seek to weave together autobiographical and collective histories; where the personal becomes political, and where womanhood, nature, and creation converge in both tenderness and resistant.

Join us for an artist talk with Carrie Hill (Akwesasne Mohawk) of Chill Baskets as she shares the traditional basketry techniques passed down through her family and ancestors, which she continues to use in crafting her black ash fancy baskets.

Hill will discuss the intersections of traditional black ash basketry, contemporary art practice, and the urgent environmental issues tied to this material tradition. The black ash tree faces devastation from the invasive emerald ash borer, threatening both the ecological and cultural continuities of this deeply rooted practice. FREE
