“Competing Images of Moses” to be
topic of lecture on March 6
Event is free and open to the
public
MIDDLEBURY, Vt.Stephen
Garfinkel, dean of the graduate school and of academic affairs at
Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, will give a lecture
titled “Competing Images of Moses in Judaism, Christianity and Islam”
at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6. The talk will be followed by a
panel discussion that will include Larry Yarbrough and Walid Saleh of
the Middlebury College religion department. The event will take place
in the Robert A. Jones 59 House on Hillcrest Road off College
Street (Route 125).
Garfinkel will argue that
Israels fate in the Pentateuch―the first five books of
the Old Testament―parallels Moses life. He will also
discuss the perception of Moses as a divine figure by some segments
of ancient Israel.
Garfinkel has been a visiting faculty
member at Yale University and adjunct faculty at Hunter College. For
many years, he served as educational coordinator for United Synagogue
Youth, where he wrote and/or edited more than 15 books for informal
Jewish educational use. His scholarly publications have appeared in
journals, including Vetus Testamentum, Conservative Judaism, and the
Journal of the Ancient Near Eastern Society. He is a member of the
Association for Jewish Studies, Columbia University Hebrew Biblical
Seminar, and the Society of Biblical Literature.
