He has the control to
build long phrases of noble melody, and his runs are executed with
immaculate precision, by fingers of absolutely equal force.

Brazilian-born pianist Arnaldo
Cohen shares his interpretations of several classics Jan. 19 at
Middlebury College
MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—Hailed as a
modern-day virtuoso, pianist Arnaldo Cohen promises to share his
style and flair at a Vermont performance Friday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. in
the Concert Hall at Middlebury College’s Center for the Arts on South
Main Street (Route 30).
Cohen’s selections for the evening
include Busoni’s arrangement of the Bach D Minor Chaconne, the four
Ballades by Chopin, and Johannes Brahms.
Born and educated in Brazil, Cohen
has been a musician since age five. He holds degrees in piano and
violin from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and trained
under Bruno Seidlhofer and Dieter Weber in Vienna. Cohen built his
career in Europe, playing the major concert halls. In addition to
solo performances, he hasappeared with a host of orchestras and
symphonies under the direction of conductors such as Kurt Masur,
Klaus Tennstedt, and Yehudi Menuhin. He’s also played with members of
smaller ensembles including the Lindsay, Orlando, and Vanbrugh
quartets. His recordings include a critically acclaimed collection of
works by Liszt.
Cohen, who lives in London, is a
fellow to the Broadwood Trust for piano studies at the Royal Northern
College of Music in Manchester, England.
Although a prominent force in the
European music world, Cohen’s talent has been showcased only
relatively recently in the United States. He debuted in New York in
the fall of 1997 to quite flattering reviews. The New York Times
found him “serious-minded” but “quite openly witty” calling him a
“big pianist” with a sound that is “splendid and full.”
Cohen’s performance is sponsored by
the Middlebury College Concert Series. Tickets are $10 for general
admission and $8 for senior citizens. A pre-performance dinner will
be held at 6:30 p.m. at Rehearsals Cafe in the Center for theArts.
For tickets or dinner reservations, call the College box office
