Grant-Writing Workshop for Faculty
of Vermont Four-Year Colleges to Take Place July 10
MIDDLEBURY, Vt.-Middlebury College and Vermont EPSCoR (Experimental Program
to Stimulate Competitive Research) are co-sponsoring a free workshop to
assist college faculty in the design and writing of competitive scientific
research proposals. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on
Monday, July 10 at Middlebury College. Pre-registration by June 30 is required.
Workshop presenters will discuss the process of applying for funding from
the Vermont EPSCoR Small College Research Development grant program. This
portion of the workshop will be followed by a talk on progressing from the
Vermont EPSCoR seed funds to independent funding by national organizations.
The event is designed to fit the needs of faculty in four-year institutions
and is open to all interested parties. Attendance by faculty deans, college
grants and development officers, and previously unfunded faculty is especially
encouraged.
The workshop will cover several topics, including talks on “Getting
Your First Grant” by Franci Farnsworth of the Middlebury College Grants
Office, and “Assisting Faculty with Grant-seeking” by both Farnsworth
and Ruth Farrell of the University of Vermont Office of Sponsored Programs.
During lunch, faculty from Middlebury, St. Michael’s, and other Vermont
colleges will offer advice and share their experiences about writing successful
grant proposals.

Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR)
The Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) is a
partnership program between states, universities, and the federal government
to help scientists, engineers, and researchers from states such as Vermont
compete successfully for federal research funding. Vermont and other states
which are mostly rural in nature typically receive significantly less than
the national average in federal funding for research. Vermont EPSCoR is
a statewide program. Researchers at 10 Vermont colleges and universities
have received Vermont EPSCoR funds which are designed to make them more
competitive for individual federal and foundation grants. Research investments
range from personnel and supplies to shared costs for the acquisition of
major scientific equipment. The resulting human and physical resources
developed by these programs strengthen Vermont’s science and engineering
infrastructure.
