22nd Edition of Middlebury College
French Department’s Traveler’s Guide to Montreal Now Available
— Free French Language Travel Booklet Available to
Tourists, and High School French Teachers and Their Students
The Middlebury College French department is again
making “Vous Allez à Montréal?”—a free
23-page travel booklet to Montreal—available to college and high
school French teachers, and travelers interested in visiting Quebec’s
capital city.
Written in French, the guide is designed for tourists
and French language students who enjoy exploring new places by
foot. For copies of the guide, write to Simon Barenbaum, French
Department, Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT 05753. For a single
copy, include a standard business-sized, self-addressed, stamped
envelope. Copies are available on a first come, first served basis.
Simon Barenbaum, professor emeritus of French at
Middlebury College, started the guide as both a learning tool
for French language students at high schools near Montreal, and
as a January term project for his own students at the College.
He continues to edit the guide, which is in its 22nd
edition.
According to Barenbaum, “Here in Vermont and
northern New York state, we are so close to Montreal, which is
the largest French-speaking city in North America. “Vous
Allez à Montréal?” encourages students who
are studying French to take advantage of this wonderful, nearby
dzܰ.”
The booklet offers walking tours in neighborhoods
ranging from old Montreal and Chinatown to Sherbrooke and the
area along Le Boulevard St. Laurent. Each tour provides highlights
of a particular part of the city. For instance, a walk in old
Montreal includes such sights as Notre Dame Cathedral and the
Museum of History and Archeology. “Vous Allez à Montréal?”
also offers information on dining and entertainment, including
an events calendar.
