The Angeles String Quartet will perform in the Concert
Hall at the Middlebury College Center for the Arts at 3:00 p.m.
on Sunday, April 19. The group is recording all of Haydn鈥檚 string
quartets and will play a program selected from those works.
Founded in 1988, the Angeles String Quartet was formed
by four string players in Los Angeles, who, within months, were
noted by the Los Angeles Times for their 鈥減erfect intonation,
natural balances, clean attacks, and a degree of unanimity that
might be envied by quartets with years of experience.鈥
Following the success of its 1989 performances in
major West Coast concert halls, the Angeles embarked on an active
annual touring schedule that has introduced the quartet to audiences
throughout the United States and Canada. Highlights of the 1996-1997
season included concerts at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art,
the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., and New York鈥檚 Lincoln
Center. The Boston Globe describes them as 鈥渁 group that
knows what it wants to say and how to say it.鈥
With support from the Joseph Haydn Society, the Angeles
String Quartet is engaged in a five-year landmark recording project
of Haydn鈥檚 entire output for string quartet. Release will begin
on the Phillips Classics label this year.
Tickets for this concert series performance are $9.00
general admission and $7.00 for senior citizens. To order tickets,
please call the College box office at 802-443-6433.
