Domestic Violence Activist and Award-Winning
Photojournalist, Donna Ferrato, to Give Talk at Middlebury College
Domestic violence activist and award-winning
photojournalist, Donna Ferrato, will present a lecture and slide
presentation of her photographs on April 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Middlebury
College’s Dana Auditorium on College Street (Route 125). The lecture,
“When Love Hurts: A talk about relationships and violence,”
is being held in conjunction with Sexual Violence Awareness Month,
which lasts through April. The event, planned in collaboration
with Addison County Women in Crisis, is free of charge and open
to the public.
Ferrato has been a professional photographer
for more than 17 years. For her documentation of domestic violence,
she has received numerous awards, including the W. Eugene Smith
Grant, The Robert F. Kennedy Award for Humanistic Photography,
and the Kodak Crystal Eagle for Courage in Journalism.
Her photographs on this topic have
appeared in many publications including, Life, Time, People, USA
Today, Ms., and The New York Times Magazine. Television reports
displaying her work on domestic violence range from the “Oprah
Winfrey Show” and “Good Morning America,” to “Dateline”
Ի&Բ;“Cdzܰ&Բ;ճ.”
In 1991, Aperture published Ferrato’s
book on domestic violence, “Living with the Enemy.”
Shortly afterwards, a New York battered women’s shelter approached
her to mount the photographs as an exhibition for a benefit event.
Building on the success of this exhibition, Ferrato founded Domestic
Abuse Awareness, Inc. (DAA), a non-profit grass roots organization
dedicated to eliminating violence in the home through increased
awareness and education. Through DAA, the exhibition has since
traveled to over 55 locations-both national and international.
It has enabled community groups to raise over $500,000 for battered
ɴdz’s&Բ;ٱ.
Ferrato also has traveled around the
world on photography assignments, featuring subjects that range
from Bruce Springsteen to the Gulf War, which have also appeared
in such publications as Fortune, The New York Times Magazine and
the German magazine Stern.
Based in New York City, Donna Ferrato
often lectures on domestic violence at universities, hospitals
and shelters.
