Quint Lecture in Jewish Studies 1996-97
On Sunday evening, April 13, Arthur
Hertzberg, who delivered the inaugural Quint Lecture in Jewish
Studies in 1988, will return for the 10th anniversary of the program
in 1997, which coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Basel
Congress. In 1988 he gave a prescient talk, titled “Israel
and Palestine: A Battle of Two Rights,” predicting that progress
toward peace in the Middle East would come only in the form of
an agreement imposed from without by the superpowers. This year
he will speak on “The Future of the Zionist Movement: A Reassessment
Dz&Բ;ٲ&Բ;ԳٱԲ.”
Mr. Hertzberg is the author of several
books, among them: The French Enlightenment and the Jews
(Columbia University Press, 1968), The Zionist Idea (Doubleday
and Herzl Press, 1959; new edition, Jewish Publication Society,
1997), The Jews in America (Simon and Schuster, 1989),
and Judaism (1961; 2nd revised ed., Touchstone, 1992).
Since 1985, he has been rabbi emeritus of Temple Emanu-El in
Englewood, New Jersey, and, since 1991, the Bronfman Visiting
Professor of the Humanities at New York University. He has also
taught at Columbia University, Dartmouth College, and has lectured
widely in this country and abroad.
The talk will be at 7:30 p.m. in Dana
Auditorium. The public is cordially invited to attend.
